"When trying to explain why an application could take a few weeks, you will probably just get weird looks. It’s hard for most to comprehend going from a full content managed website deployed in a day to a few weeks for an application that is almost similar. These employers aren’t fully educated on the technology behind either, most the time they think building an application is like drawing a box in Photoshop. You can’t blame them though, this isn’t their job."

I couldn't have said it better Fred, and thats coming from the person who has not a damn clue about computer programming. Ill stick to boxes in photoshop.

This is all so true when working for someone else. But I also find myself having to scale down my own projects just so that they will get done in a reasonable amount of time! So many ideas and so little time to implement them all. I can't wait for more posts.

I have to agree with you Fred. Most developers are into computer programming because they love doing it. This isn't really a job that you do just to put food on the table.

When I get a project the first thing I do is plan the entire thing out in my head. When I'm actually ready I sit down with a empty folder and build the file structure, then start building the core library files for my application which usually consist of most, if not all the functionality for the site.

The problem I have is I'm a perfectionist. I like things to be perfect so I will be in the middle of writing out a piece of the application, switch to another file and see "oh wow, I bet I could change this to be less lines of code", or "maybe I should add this feature to this function just in case I want it in the future", etc.

Now this seems completely reasonable to most people, even myself at those times. What I think a lot of people don't realize is that those little changes that you make hurt more then they fix.

If you're constantly trying to make your application better then whats actually needed most likely you're not going to be taking a lot more time to complete the project.

It was a great read and I'll be looking forward to more articles!
